If there is anything I gained from four years of education at RIT, it is that we are never done learning. Education is imperative to staying current, improving, growing and creating meaningful, beautiful art.

If there is anything I gained from four years of education at RIT, it is that we are never done learning. Life is about learning, and I am forever a student.

Graduation day at RIT with my then-boyfriend, John. Three days later, we were engaged!

Lets be clear, I explored many facets of photography at RIT. I spent a year studying art in general, and another year specifically on the art & history of photography. Three semesters worth of my time was spent learning the science of photography, both digital and analog. I became more intimately acquainted with various cameras and lighting equipment. I developed the technical know-how behind making quality images. I also improved my Photoshop techniques for extending, perfecting and outputting images. I analyzed all levels of photography, and gained experience in critiquing my own work as well as others’.

RIT also gave me access to new topics like book making, design principles, digital printing, color management, writing business plans and many more technical things I was able to bring into my workflow. It was not only knowledge gained in the class room either. There are also the intangibles, such as getting back up after getting knocked down, and being stronger because of it. RIT taught me to be a problem solver, a better person and a better photographer. I have some wonderful teachers and mentors to thank for what I left with.

Storytelling with pictures was one of my biggest take-aways. I attended RIT to study photojournalism: capturing moments as they happen, being prepared with the right equipment and know-how to get the shot quickly; to tell the story visually. “F/8 and be there!” and other famous quotes were tossed around. The importance of lighting, composition, lens choice, and subject matter were stressed. And of course, practice, practice, practice.

I then jumped into the real world, putting all this knowledge to use. I’ve learned a great deal about running a business over the last two years, things that can’t be taught in a class room or bought on DVD. Working with different types of people, selling, pricing, communicating, branding, marketing, networking… I could go on. The point is, I am always learning, and always will be.

Joe McNally on stage at the Flash Bus, teaching us how to light with small flashes.

On that note, I recently attended the Flash Bus Tour in Buffalo, NY, hosted by two fantastic educators: David Hobby (The Strobist) and Joe McNally (National Geographic). As Hobby was speaking, he mentioned how open and giving the photography industry is now. He recommended getting to know other local photographers, working with them, sharing equipment, assisting each other and learning from one another. As I sat there listening to him talk, I looked at the row of photographers to the left of me: Erin Perrotta, Val Sorrells, Terri Parthum, and Pat Luke. We had all traveled together for this event. We looked at each other and laughed, thinking “Yes, what a wonderful idea…”

As members of GRPP (Greater Rochester Professional Photographers), that is exactly what we do. We share ideas and thoughts. We help each other with questions about products, images, and websites, striving to make each other to be better. Its hard for me to imagine the industry as it used to be: so closed off, secretive and hostile (as I have been told). When I learn something new, I’m calling my colleagues, saying “Guess what I did! Lets get together and I’ll show you how!” And the best part is that I know they will do the same thing for me. These friendships are worth more to me than any college degree.

Its not all business, we do have fun too! Here are some of my favorite GRPP members and I ready for the toga party.

Education is imperative to staying current, improving, growing and creating meaningful, beautiful art. I am continuing to explore and try new things every day. Just last month, I attended the Photo North East Convention and listened to nationally renowned photographers. I read the blogs and books of Hobby, McNally and others because their work inspires me. I participate on the board of GRPP and learn from excellent local photographers. All of this continues to shape who I am as a person, and as a photographer.

Thank you for being along on this ride with me as I grow, learn, and improve. Every picture I take moves me toward a better one, and there are so many people to thank for getting me on this road, and pushing me further.

Thank you to my clients who have believed in me, trusting me to capture their special moments.

Thank you to my RIT professors: Bill DuBois, Eric Kunsman, Lorrie Frear, Denis Defibaugh, Loret Steinberg, Guenther Cartwright, Michael Riordan, Matthew Bernius, and the ever-supportive Deb Kingsbury and Kathy Hall. Also to my fellow students who helped me along the way, especially Megan Rossman.

Thank you to my peers locally: Erin Perrotta, Linda Hayes, Kathy Pieters, Heather McKay, Sue Egan, Pat Luke, Brady Dillsworth, Paul Van Hoy II, Paul Freeman, Chris Kogut, Val Sorrells, Tim Toal, Terri Parthum, Danielle Zielinski, Scott Crist, Scott Slattery, Bob Steere, John Larkin, Teri Fisk, Michael Hanlon, Steve Craddock, Jim Cavanaugh, Neil Sjoblom and all the others who I have had the pleasure of learning with.

Thank you to my peers nationally who continue to inspire me: , Vanessa Joy and Rob Adams, Joe McNally, David Hobby, Jason Groupp, Doug Gordon, Alex Buono, Sarah Petty, Storey Wilkins, Adam Forgione, Stacy Reeves and so many more.

Most importantly, thank you to my parents, husband, family and friends that support me as I continue on this journey and make it all possible.

Whats the future bring? More learning of course. I’m certain this list of people to thank will grow. I’ll also continue to blog some “Photo Tips” I’ve picked up along the way to give back just as I have been given to. I’m so glad to be a part of this industry of creative people, surrounded by talent and fresh ideas. I’m going to continue my pursuit of better images, better stories, and being a better photographer/wife/daughter/sister/aunt/friend/colleague/business owner.

Thank you for your support as I continue to learn and grow!

“I already have the things I need for my home, why do I need to register at Macy’s?”

“I really don’t want China (or) I’m getting my grandmother’s China, so I don’t need to register for it.”

“We really love our photographs, we just don’t have the budget right now for large prints/canvas/albums.”

and from my parents generation,

“I really wish I had a nice album to share with my kids and grandkids. We didn’t have all of these options you kids have nowadays.”

Wedding Photography Registry

People truly appreciate the power of photography and its impact on our memories, thoughts and feelings. Who wouldn’t love beautiful images of themselves, their friends and family, gracing their walls and tables? We are making it easier to get and give the Gift of Memories.

All current brides and grooms of Light+Ink now have the option of a Wedding Photography Registry. A photo registry can increase your budget for photography, prints and albums. It’s also a great way for guests to give you something you want, a personal gift that won’t be returned or re-gifted! You choose how to spend your certificates, which are available in any denomination starting at just $25. Gift Certificates are a great gift idea for engagement parties, wedding showers, and the wedding itself. Give once, or all three times! This is the one gift where duplicates are welcome!

How it Works

Send your guests to this link: http://lightandink.com/gift/

In the center of the page, they will see a PayPal “Buy it Now” Button. They select the amount to give, enter your name and their name, and -boom- you have extra money to spend on your wedding photos! Its really that easy. We will send a card with the gift amount straight to you or back to the purchaser to give to you personally.

For Babies, Birthdays, House Warming Gifts, Anniversaries, and Just Because!

Its not just for weddings. Gift certificates are also good toward our custom portrait sessions.

This summer, we received a call from Cole Publishing, the makers of Onsite Installer, a monthly magazine for the Waste Water Treatment Industry. I was very happy to be asked to photograph the local company Meyers Environmental for a featured article on the retiring owner. The shoot spanned two days and involved photographing the former owner as well as the new owners, equipment, facilities, staff and an in-progress job site.

In November 2010, the story ran with seven of my photographs including the front cover. I’m very pleased with the final layout and honored to have been part of this magazine both in print, and online. Click here to view the full E-Zine.

The month of May was a bit nutty here at Light and Ink. Two years of planning culminated into a weekend of family, friends, food, fun and great memories, oh and a name change! Of course, there was a wedding, and this time I was on the other side of the lens! It was an awesome experience. I loved having all of the people I love in one place. It was great to really enjoy the whole weekend and know that it was being captured. Thanks to John Larkin Photography and Far Country Media for their photography and videography coverage, respectively. Here are a few photos from our special day.

One special part of our wedding day, was when I surprised my dad was a photo slideshow at our Father/Daughter dance. I arranged photos of the two of us from baby times through adult times, and we played them on a screen behind us while we danced. Nearly all the guests were in tears or close to it. My dad loved it and it was the perfect surprise.

The name cards were designed here at Light and Ink and matched the invitations, programs and other wedding stationary we used. The food preference was noted by the color of grapes that appeared on the card.

Its good to be back! I am excited to be back, focusing on Light and Ink, ready to shoot-shoot-shoot! Memorial Day weekend was a busy one for us, so keep an eye out for some more updates coming this way!

And now for the good news – we’re pleased to let you know that one of your photos has been selected for the exhibit!”

I was very excited to receive this note from Shana at Full Moon Vista: the best cycling shop in Rochester, in my humble opinion. This is their third annual juried exhibit of cycling related photos, and my first time submitting.

I bought my first bike since middle school at their shop last Spring. I enjoyed putting some 300 miles on it throughout the year, most of which I had a camera draped over my shoulder for! This is part of a personal project I have been working on, documenting the scenes I peddle past, as seen from a moving bicycle.

If you are in Rochester on February 4th or 5th, I encourage you to stop down and see the other winning submissions from 7-9:30pm. I’ll be there, enjoying the imagery and refreshments! Full Moon Vista is located at 180 Saint Paul Street, Rochester NY 14604
